Servicing falls into 2 types dependant on how the car is used and manufacturer recommendations. These are mileage based (e.g. complete an oil change every 12,000 miles) or time based (e.g. undertake a brake fluid change every 2 years).
An Interim service is the base level of service and should be undertaken regularly. It includes changing the oil and filter, as well as carry out a basic vehicle health check (check tyre pressures, screen wash etc.). Changing the oil in line with (or slightly before!) the manufacturers guidelines will prolong the life of your engine.
This includes the Interim Service, plus filters as required such as Air filter (filters the air into the engine) and the pollen / cabin air filter (filters the air into the car via A/C system), plus a thorough inspection of suspension, brakes, steering etc.
This includes the Full service, plus additional replacements such as spark plugs, fuel filters, cambelt and likely gearbox or clutch service (see below)
Water ingresses into brake fluid over time and needs to be changed to ensure optimal performance and safety. A relatively quick task to undertake, it can be done at any time but usually every 2-3 years is recommended.
